Friday June 10. We head to Borne

Borne ( https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=borne+netherlands&ei=UTF-8&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-004 )
is where Laura and Frederik live. It is about 3? hours from Brussels.  We enjoyed breakfast in Brussels at a little shop within walking distance of our hotel on Friday morning, then left for a day of sightseeing, and a round-about way to their home.

It was very interesting to visit the Flanders Field cemetery!  https://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries-memorials/europe/flanders-field-american-cemetery#.V16AaaKi7zg
In this cemetery the inscription lists the name, rank, age, and country/state of where they are from.  It's not a huge cemetery, and in walking  around the whole thing I found only 2 from Nebraska.

Here's an interesting link that Laura found for me about this!   http://www.themadtraveleronline.com/articles/where-the-poppies-grow-touring-flanders-fields/

We stopped at another cemetery also Beautifully kept, and shows such a respect for those who died fighting in the wars.

The Poppy's!  We were a little disappointed that there are no actual "fields of poppys", however they do grow and are found alot in random areas.

I really love all the green and flowers we see here!

The following photos are random country side pictures, taken out the window.  It's interesting to me to see how different or similar other countries areas are to ours.

Here's a familiar sight for us, here they are mixed in with the old!

Another familiar sign--and even tho I'm not a MD fan, finding food after a long day of road-tripping was a very welcome thing.

Our first sight of a traditional windmill in Holland!
Lots of traffic between Brussles and Borne.  Sometimes a 6 lane freeway.  This is something that I really did not expect!
 A Canal

The houses definitely have a different style than what is familiar in our area of the States.

More narrow winding streets and old buildings in this town we stopped in to do some sightseeing.
There was a museum there, "In Flanders Field Museum".  We looked a bit inside, but It is very huge and Laura didn't feel like making the trec around it.  The town was very interesting too.  Ypres-- http://www.greatwar.co.uk/ypres-salient/town-ieper.htm
The following are pictures from there.  So very impressive was The Menin gate-  https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=ypres+belgium&ei=UTF-8&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-004

In the middle of the sightseeing, it's lunch time, of course.  we stopped at a "fast food" restaurant .  Can you spot the "water closet"?  Closet indeed! :)

Now that is a beautiful salad--step it up, USA McDonalds!

The above photos are explained in the links I posted.  So very interesting!!

Stop signs? Stop lights? I see very few here in comparison to home.

The first "real" windmill we saw!

The houses are so very unique.  Th ached roofs are common, The decorative shutters signify what area they live in.

It's already Monday evening here, and we've had another big day of sightseeing and some errands.  I think tomorrow will be a  lazy day, so I hope to catch up on here so it's easier to post. On my next post, Saturday, you can see what we did around the outskirts of Borne.  Later!
